{"id":63,"date":"2017-04-28T08:51:11","date_gmt":"2017-04-28T07:51:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.katarinka.sk\/?page_id=63"},"modified":"2023-01-16T20:54:58","modified_gmt":"2023-01-16T19:54:58","slug":"historia","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.katarinka.sk\/en\/katarinka-monastery\/history\/","title":{"rendered":"History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<h2>History of St Catherine\u2019s Monastery<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>First third of 15<sup>th<\/sup> century<\/strong> \u2013 Gothic chapel made of stone on the site in the woods of Mal\u00e9 Karpaty Mountains on rocky hill above Dubovsk\u00fd stream<\/li>\n<li><strong>Late 1500s<\/strong> \u2013 Supposed apparitions of St Catherine to a shepherd, who built here a small chapel into a cave<\/li>\n<li><strong>1617<\/strong> \u2013 Recorded apparition of St Catherine to a ploughman J\u00e1n Manca, inhabitant of Dechtice. Noble young man J\u00e1n Apponyi, the son of a rich count from Jablonica, had come to live here as a hermit in the cave. When his noble family got angry and forced him to return home, he died of sorrow the next day. He is said to be hallowed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>1618 \u2013 21<sup>st<\/sup> December \u2013 Count Kri\u0161tof Erd\u00f6di, the domain owner, issued the foundation document establishing a Franciscan monastery on this site<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-260 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.katarinka.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/hypoteticka_rekonstrukcia_katarinka.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"520\" height=\"370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.katarinka.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/hypoteticka_rekonstrukcia_katarinka.png 800w, https:\/\/www.katarinka.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/hypoteticka_rekonstrukcia_katarinka-300x213.png 300w, https:\/\/www.katarinka.sk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/hypoteticka_rekonstrukcia_katarinka-768x546.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><br \/>\n<em>Hypotetical reconstruction (Author: Petra Gojdi\u010dov\u00e1)<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>1619<\/strong> \u2013 The new monastery had first twelve inhabitants<\/li>\n<li><strong>1645<\/strong> \u2013 St Catherine`s monastery was plundered and set on fire during an armed rebellion of Hungarian nobility (Juraj R\u00e1koci I.)<\/li>\n<li><strong>1646<\/strong> \u2013 Reconstruction and rebuilding of the site led by the founder`s son Gabriel Erd\u00f6di with his wife Judita Amade. The church was substantially rebuilt to incorporate the original small one from 1618 as the chancel of the new one.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Around 1650<\/strong> \u2013 The Chordigers \u2013 members of layman Franciscan Order \u2013 started their caring for the sick and the poor here. Emperor Joseph II. abolished this fellowship in 1782.<\/li>\n<li><strong>1663<\/strong> \u2013 Monastery was attacked first by the Turks, later on by emperor`s army. The soldiers killed noblemen who were seeking refuge from persecution at St Catherine`s<\/li>\n<li><strong>1683<\/strong> \u2013 Another raid carried out on the monastery by the troops of Imrich T\u00f6koly<\/li>\n<li><strong>1697<\/strong> \u2013 At the pilgrimage attended by a huge number of people \u2013 some soldiers tried to recruit young boys into the army with the use of violence. The crowd of pilgrims pushed the soldiers in the church and one soldier was lynched in this accident.<\/li>\n<li><strong>1701 \u2013 9<sup>th<\/sup> January<\/strong> \u2013 The church tainted by murder was consecrated again. Juraj and Kri\u0161tof II. Erd\u00f6di issued a deed of gift of 500 ducats for the church`s maintenance<\/li>\n<li><strong>1710 \u2013 9<sup>th<\/sup> September<\/strong> \u2013 During a cholera epidemic very famous Franciscan monk Benignus Smrtn\u00edk (1650-1710) died. He was the author of various religious books in Slovak, e.g. Kun\u0161t dobre umr\u00edti (The Art of a Good Death).<\/li>\n<li><strong>In 18<sup>th<\/sup> century<\/strong> \u2013 Numerous donors \u2013 mainly nobility but villagers as well \u2013 gave large gifts to the monastery. Families of noble origin built their crypts on this site (e.g. Erd\u00f6di, Apponyi, and Lab\u0161ansk\u00ed)<\/li>\n<li><strong>1782<\/strong> \u2013 Juraj F\u00e1ndly, the parish priest in Nah\u00e1\u010d, complained about his worshippers. Most of them preferred St Catherine`s church to the parish one. More to be read in his well-known book D\u00fawern\u00e1 zml\u00fava mezi mn\u00edchom a di\u00e1blom, 1789.<\/li>\n<li><strong>1786 \u2013 22<sup>nd<\/sup> July \u2013 Joseph II. Emperor`s decree abolished St Catherine`s monastery as \u201cuseless\u201d<\/strong>, together with 738 monasteries in the empire, which did not take care of the poor or educate the youth.<\/li>\n<li><strong>1787 \u2013 22<sup>nd<\/sup> January<\/strong> \u2013 Monastery was transferred to state control. Valuable equipment and inventory were step by step moved to surrounding churches and monasteries, many of these were spontaneously stolen or lost forever&#8230;<\/li>\n<li><strong>1788 \u2013 1792<\/strong> \u2013 Seven disabled former soldiers from Trnava lived in and looked after the deserted monastery<\/li>\n<li><strong>1793<\/strong> \u2013 Church crypts were plundered by three thieves<\/li>\n<li><strong>1797<\/strong> \u2013 Neglected objects of the former monastery were bought by Jozef Erd\u00f6di, as a tribute to his ancestors buried in the crypts. However, gradually the objects went to ruins.<\/li>\n<li><strong>1811<\/strong> \u2013 Calvary statuary, originally from St Catherine`s monastery, was brought by Erd\u00f6di family to Dechtice, the nearby village.<\/li>\n<li><strong>1835<\/strong> \u2013 The last official mention of \u201eguardian of St Catherine\u201c\u2013 that time it was Jozef Koll\u00e1r from Dechtice<\/li>\n<li><strong>1869, 1891<\/strong> \u2013 The first historical publications dealing with St Catherine`s monastery appeared: authors such as Bal\u00e1zsovits or Jedlicska<\/li>\n<li><strong>1905<\/strong> &#8211; Four above-standard sandstone sculptures of Franciscans, situated on the top corners of St Catherine`s church tower were moved to P\u00e1lffi`s burial crypt in Smolenice churchyard.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The 1930s<\/strong> \u2013 Scouts` camps and Franciscan novices` trips to St Catherine`s<\/li>\n<li><strong>2<sup>nd<\/sup> half of 20th century<\/strong> \u2013 The communist state lost interest in the site, only historians \u2013 Hadri\u00e1n Radv\u00e1ni and mainly Jozef \u0160imon\u010di\u010d- took up interest in the place<\/li>\n<li><strong>1995 \u2013 3<sup>rd<\/sup> July<\/strong> \u2013 Picturesque ruins came to life again thanks to youth\u2019s activity and their \u201cKatar\u00ednka Order \u2013 the preservationists\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Extended history<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"\/dokumenty\/plagaty\/historia_letak_en_1.2_print.pdf\">Guide about Katar\u00ednka (pdf)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katarinka.sk\/klastor-katarinka\/historia\/historia-strucne-z-minulosti-davnej\/\">A short story from the ancient history<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Martina Matulov\u00e1: <a href=\"\/dokumenty\/prace\/diplomova_praca_martinamatulova_klastorsvkatarinypridechticiach2003.pdf\">St. Catherine\u2019s Monastery near Dechtice village<\/a> (master&#8217;s thesis, 2003, in Slovak) pdf (560 kB)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.katarinka.sk\/klastor-katarinka\/historia\/uryvok-kostol-a-klastor-svatej-katariny\/\">P\u00e1l Jedlicska: <em>Kisk\u00e1rpaty Eml\u00e9kek<\/em> II.
